A key trend in high throughput screening is assay miniaturization to control screening costs without compromising data output and quality. Schering has addressed this issue by implementation the concept of 50 nl 'ready-to-use' compound plates for miniaturized assay formats (≤ 5 µl).
The 'ready-to-use' plates approach separates temporally compound plate production from the assay run itself. This concept combines the advantages of a highly automated compound plate production and semi-automated workstation screening, to enable fast, flexible and cost-efficient runs of HTS campaigns. To implement this approach, assay and compound volume were decreased by a factor of 6 and 15, respectively. An automated system preparing 50 nl 'ready-to-use' compound plates and conditions for mid-term storage of compound plates were established. For the assay run itself, dispenser systems with low dead volume were introduced to gain maximum reagent cost savings. These measures allow a triplication of data points by same reagent costs.
