Successful automation of a process that involves continued cell culture and a non-linear workflow requires a sophisticated event driven scheduling component, real-time data processing, efficient data management and an effective mechanism for users to communicate with the system and visualize data. A unique and integrated automation platform has been implemented at Medarex to increase both the throughput of the Hybridoma process and the quality of data being generated, while allowing for the flexibility often compromised using other approaches.

The benefits of process improvement, standardization and central data management have enabled us to shift our attention back to functional biology. An overview of the parallel development of robotics and custom software, and some of the challenges we overcame to reach our aggressive goal of a fully integrated Hybridoma automation lab will be presented.
